We’ve all had those manuscripts that we poured our heart into, fell in love with the characters and still think of them at random, but unfortunately had to shelf. Now it’s time for a little spring cleaning. Take out those manuscripts and Dust It Off!
The first day, May 3rd: We want you to post a 1-2 sentence pitch (Great way to practice pitches) about the shelved WIP.
I’m going to share my Nanowrimo 2009 WIP–Draguman. This wip will never see the light of day, but it was a great experiment.
Pitch—
When a young man accidentally binds himself to a dragon, he discovers an endless potential for growth for both species. In an effort to share this joy, he creates a creature that is part dragon and part human, but not even the dragon-kin can accept this abomination.
That really doesn’t do it justice and there are some clunky phrases I don’t like.
Any suggestions?

Sounded good to me! It's definitely an intriguing concept! My shelved WIP is like yours and will never see the light of day again (that line made me laugh, lol).
Never done a Nanowrimo. It'd be fun to know how many published novels come out of it.
I think it's a pretty good pitch! It's amazing how much we learn in just a couple of years, though!
I'm hooked with Dragons. A Frankenstein-ish theme. Sound like something I'd read. =)
I think some things are better left in the dark. 😉 Actually, I've used it as a junk yard of sorts for the bits of back story I needed for the rest of the Sendek Saga.
They used to have a page of published works, but I just looked and can't find it now. I know "Water For Elephants" was a nano book. My book Sendek: The Magic Wakes was a nano 2008 and it will be published next year. I'll keep looking and see if I can find the list.

I keep thinking some parts might make great short stories. Then if Sendek is a hit, I have a short history anthology that I could put out too. In fact, just Elvin's part of the story would make a great entry to Worlds of Fiction. Hm, maybe I should dust it off for real and work on that first 1/4 of the book as a short story…

There has been a lot of dragons today but everyone holds my interest and are different. Great pitch!

While driving my daughter to school an hour late, I figured out what I don't like about this pitch. The word abomination. I'm letting a character from Sendek influence the description of the Draguman. Granted that character is a dragon who was present during the time they were exiled, but still. 🙂

Interesting concept. This sounds like an exploration into racism from a fantasy point of view and I love it. I think its wonderful when writers take risks with their story and have one thing going on the surface, but a very real world issue going on just beneath.
I would love to read an excerpt from this. Dragons seem to be on the come up.
Why will this story never see the light of day? It sounds awesome. I love dragons, and the idea of one joining with a human excites me. This is a fantasy story I'd definitely read.

I'm starting to wonder myself. 🙂 It probably will never appear the way written, but I'm seriously considering rewriting it to tell Elvin's story. That's the part everyone seems interested in anyway.

It sounds like a very interesting premise. I'm normally not really into fantasy, but I do like dragon stories.

You can't go wrong with a dragon! And such an awesome concept, binding oneself to a dragon, part dragon part human! I would read it in a second. I could actually see it as a movie. I hope you take it off the shelf and give it another chance.
