IWSG July 2013 Get A New Idea

Welcome to my July post for IWSG, Alex Cavanaugh’s brain child that gives us a place and time to discuss our insecurities as well as our successes. Check out the link to find more insecure writer’s over at Alex’s place.

It’s amazing what a day can do. Several of them ago, I thought I would be posting an insecure tirade about my frustrations. And I really didn’t want to. I don’t know when I’ll get a full size keyboard to type on again, or even when Talia and Landry will forgive me and decide to cooperate with their story. But, something did happen yesterday that has me writing again.

I found a shiny new idea.

Actually I’ve been thinking about this idea for the last six months, but thought I’d never write it because it isn’t my normal thing (romance/crime novel). It was one of those that I filed away to give a friend who writes in this genre. Yesterday I gave myself permission to write it myself. So what if certain members of my family would not approve. I’m not writing for them, I’m writing for me. And if it’s good enough I can always publish it under a pen name.

Yeah, so that’s my advice today for all the insecure writer’s out there.

1. DON’T give up!
2. Find a NEW idea if you have to, but KEEP writing!
3. LEARN to shut out the outside voices and listen to your heart.

Now, for my summer questions…

If you had strap on wings (that really worked), where would you fly? Why?

  1. I'd fly over traffic, that's for sure. Why wouldn't your family approve? Or certain members anyway.Try something new. It just might recharge you.

  2. I love your advice to get a new idea. It can be so hard to make something work, but when you have new ideas, everything starts to work again. There's a saying: Writing begets writing. I bet writing this new idea will free up Talia and Landry's story too.

  3. How exciting! I love a shiny new thing like that! Ally and I found a couple shiny new things this week as well! Unfortunately that means she's dropped her book I need her to finish and it will take some convincing to get her back on it 🙂 But it sure is invigorating to sit down with something that writes itself! If I had wings I'd fly home to my momma's and back home to my family repeatedly whenever I needed her to hug me. She's just a little to far away for my taste 🙂

  4. There's nothing like a new love to make an ex take notice of you. Just might make Talia and Landry come back too.If I had wings I would fly to the roof of my house. If I didn't have to call the fire department to come help me down I'd get more adventurous and go play on the wind currents.

  5. You are so practical Alex! But smart. If I could fly over traffic I wouldn't get so frustrated driving. As for the approval. Hubby isn't big on the idea of me writing romance. He even had issues with some of the kissing scenes in TMW. I've tried to tell him it will always be clean romance with just lots of great tension and no graphic scenes, but *shrugs*. Ah well. I love him anyway.

  6. I hope so! It would be wonderful to speak to those two again. Maybe they're just enjoying their honeymoon and don't want to be bothered? I'll just keep working on this shiny new idea until they get home. 😉

  7. Shiny!! You'll be tortured with my new shiny when we meet up again for writer's group. Does Ally ever come read her stuff? She's your oldest? And I love your flying idea. I'd like to visit my mom more often too.

  8. LOL, love your wing answer! And I'm hoping Talia and Landry will come home soon. 😉

  9. First, always write for yourself, not others. Second, I'd fly just above the ground, skimming the treetops & lake's surface & the grassy plains. Any where its beautiful. ~ Alex's #3 minion.

  10. Why would you give your idea to someone else? Don't you know that the ideas that come to you are the things you're supposed to write? Wings? Yikes. My acrophobia would kick in, and I wouldn't be able to get myself off the ground.

  11. Strap on wings? Geez… I'd go anywhere. Everywhere. I'm not sure I could narrow it down, but I can guarantee it would involve mountains.Don't give your ideas away! It might anger your muse…
