You can go to You Gotta Read Videos and vote for Alex’s book trailer.
What’s your favorite genre to read/write?
I enjoy reading fantasy, science fiction, and some thriller, but I enjoy writing science fiction best.
How do you “get in the zone” when writing? Do you listen to music? Look through art? Something else?
Music! I put on some really heavy tunes and get into groove.
What’s your favorite part of being a writer?
I get to create adventures I want to read but no one has written yet.
What’s your least favorite part?
Promotions. I hate having to assert myself to promote my books.
Are you a pantser or plotter, or a mix?
Avid outliner! If I didn’t create an outline I’d have no idea where I was going. Might end up in Tibet…
Best thinking activity? (e.g. washing dishes, folding clothes, driving)
Playing my guitar. It’s peaceful and my mind can wander. Sometimes it even comes back…
How do you go about choosing names, locations etc?
I brainstorm unusual but simple alien names and then match them to characters. The whole process takes about thirty minutes. Deep, I know!
How long did you work on CassaStar and CassaFire?
CassaStar took about two years to complete but I finished revisions and everything for CassaFire in seven months.
What is your favorite moment, scene or line from the story?
There are several scenes in CassaFire where Byron and Athee banter back and forth. Probably my favorite scene involves an explosion and what that event reveals about the characters.
Most of us write part time. How do you spend your time when you aren’t writing?
I watch a lot of movies and TV. Yeah, I’m a junkie! I practice playing my guitar every night and I’m always jamming tunes. I’m also a computer game nerd. Want to play Orcs Must Die with me?
Current favorite song?
“The Barrier” by a band called 3. Really! Not Three – 3.

The Vindicarn War is a distant memory and Byron’s days of piloting Cosbolt fighters are over. He has kept the promise he made to his fallen mentor and friend – to probe space on an exploration vessel. Shuttle work is dull, but it’s a free and solitary existence. The senior officer is content with his life aboard the Rennather.
The detection of alien ruins sends the exploration ship to the distant planet of Tgren. If their scientists can decipher the language, they can unlock the secrets of this device. Is it a key to the Tgren’s civilization or a weapon of unimaginable power? Tensions mount as their new allies are suspicious of the Cassan’s technology and strange mental abilities.
To complicate matters, the Tgrens are showing signs of mental powers themselves; the strongest of which belongs to a pilot named Athee, a woman whose skills rival Byron’s unique abilities. Forced to train her mind and further develop her flying aptitude, he finds his patience strained. Add a reluctant friendship with a young scientist, and he feels invaded on every level. All Byron wanted was his privacy…

CassaFire is the sequel to Cavanaugh’s first book, CassaStar, an Amazon Top Ten Best Seller:
“…calls to mind the youthful focus of Robert Heinlein’s early military sf, as well as the excitement of space opera epitomized by the many Star Wars novels. Fast-paced military action and a youthful protagonist make this a good choice for both young adult and adult fans of space wars.” – Library Journal
